Why Ransomware Attacks Small Business’s

When most people think of ransomware attacks, they think of them attacking larger corporations or medium size business’s. But in half of ransomware cases smaller business’s are the ones that get hit with the attack. There is a reason they target these business, which we will explain.

The most likely reason is having limited cyber security resources. Larger business’s have a dedicated IT team which checks on network security, enforces policies, and are constantly checking for holes in the network. Where as small business’s a lot of the time are running their network with one person wearing many hats, or do not have a network admin at all. This is why it’s important to have an MSP (Managed Service Provider) to monitor and enforce security within your network.

Another reason why they may attack smaller business’s is smaller business’s may think they’re too small of a target and leave vulnerabilities within their network. This is something that hackers know which causes them to target these smaller business’s.

Smaller business’s may also have a lack of backups or recovery tools. It is always important to have backups and corrective measures to be able to recover from an attack. Smaller business’s may keep their backups on the same network and not test that these recovery backups still work. Or some even worse may not have a recovery back up plan at all.

Overall it is incredibly important to have proper cyber security however big or small your business is. Having an MSP is important to make sure you have the correct security within your network. An MSP can help you with important steps such as multi factor authentication, patches and updates for your systems, regular offsite backups, cyber security training, and more.
